Productivity Study of Hydroblast Removal of Coatings
By Ocean City Research Corp. on 12/1/98, Reference number NSRP 0520

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate and document the use of closed and open cycle hydroblasting for the removal of various coatings in representative areas of a ship, such as hull, non-skid areas, tanks, and surfaces with complex geometry. Traditional coating removal by abrasive blasting is rapidly being restricted by environmental constraints. Hydroblasting has come to the forefront, offering many advantages over abrasive blasting. On site inspections using standardized data sheets were conducted. Information was gathered on conditions prior to blasting, the actual water jetting process, and surface condition afterward. Problems noted were the occurrence of flash rusting and worker fatigue. (N3-96-4) (168 p) (1.7 M)

NSRP 0329
The Effect of Substrate Contaminants on the Life of Epoxy Coating Submerged in Sea Water
by Dr. Gerald C. Soltz
released 6/1/91

The purpose of this project was to study the effects that contaminants, commonly occurring in the marine environment, have on epoxy coating systems. Three standard ballast tank coatings plus a clear epoxy coating were tested. Three chemicals and various size blasting grit particles were used as contaminants. Sea salt and sodium chloride were found to be much more detrimental to epoxy coatings, than was ferrous sulfate or the grit particles. (160 p.)

Details of Using UHP in the restoration of the William Penn Statue.

New ultrahigh-pressure water jetting systems operating at 35,000 to 55,000 psi provide cleaning jets traveling at speeds up to 3000 fps.

Operating conditions, cleaning rates, and performance differ substantially from standard equipment with several significant advantages applicable in todays environmentally and safety- conscious society.

Early in 1971, the first ultrahigh-pressure compact intensifier pumps were under development representing the only significant technological change in high pressure pumps in recent history.

Based upon the practical and economical use of prime movers, an operating pressure of 35,000 to 40,000 psi was selected, with maximum pump flow rates to 6 gpm.

With 35,000 psi water pressure and extreme jet velocity, the JETWAND is capable of producing a near white finish on metals without the use of abrasives.

A light-weight tool weighing less than 12 lbs., the JETLANCE is capable of rotating multiple nozzles at speeds up to 2000 rpm.

For example, if the requirement is to remove a thin coating or light deposits from a rather sensitive substrate, up to 8 each .004" sapphire nozzles will be rotated at maximum speed to achieve a very clean surface without deformation or damage.

The size of the nozzle used on the rotating lance is dependent upon the thickness and tensile adhesion of the coating.

Should rust inhibitors be required, a variety are commercially available that can be easily added to the cleaning water up-stream of the intensifier water inlet port.

High velocity jets are especially well suited for this type of use since the jet speed allows actual cutting of the rubber just prior to separation from the substrate.
